Sad news to report as junior welterweight boxer, Maxim Dadashev, passed away today as a result of brain injuries suffered during his fight against Subriel Matias on Friday night.
He was only 28 years old.
Dadashev was rushed to the hospital after his trainer, Buddy McGirt, stopped the fight. Clearly seeing that something was wrong with his fighter, McGirt signaled to the ref to end it and his team carried the fighter out, who was having obvious trouble walking. He was vomiting and collapsed before making it to the dressing room, after which he was taken by ambulance to UM Prince George’s Hospital Center in Cheverly, Maryland, and had been there since Friday night.
“It just makes you realize what type of sport we’re in, man,” said McGirt to ESPN. “He did everything right in training, no problems, no nothing. My mind is like really running crazy right now. Like, what could I have done differently? But at the end of the day, everything was fine [in training].
“He seemed OK, he was ready, but it’s the sport that we’re in. It just takes one punch, man.”
Dadashev (13-1, 11 KOs), was from Saint Petersburg, Russia, and leaves behind his wife and son.
