The film is set at Fox 2000 and was acquired before the novel was even published. Adeyemi’s seven-figure deal with Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group for the book was one of the biggest YA debut novel publishing deals ever.

The novel follows heroine Zélie Adebola as she attempts to restore magic to the kingdom of Orïsha, following the ruling class kosidáns’ brutal suppression of the class of magic practioners Zélie belongs to, the maji.

Children of Blood and Bone is the first novel in a planned trilogy. The second book in the trilogy will be released in June.

Famuyiwa most recently directed Kerry Washington as Anita Hill in the HBO film, Confirmation. He is also directing episodes of the Star Wars series, The Mandalorian, for Disney+.
