Sources connected to Smollett told TMZ, the actor arrived in Chicago from New York late Monday, and at around 2 AM he was hungry and went to a nearby Subway. When he walked out, someone yelled, “Aren’t you that F***ot ‘Empire’ n*****?”
The two suspects, both white males wearing ski masks, brutally attacked him, breaking his rib. The two men also put a rope around his neck, poured bleach on him and yelled, “This is MAGA country” and left.
Smollett has been very vocal about his sexuality and is an active social activist. The actor serves on the board of the Black AIDS Institute (BAI), a Los Angeles-based think tank focused solely on ending the AIDS epidemic in the Black community. He once raised $40,000 in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Black communities.
Chicago PD is investigating the incident as a battery. The police also say they are treating the incident as a possible hate crime.
