6 Must See Summer Movies

The summer blockbuster season is upon us. And with the kids out of school, weather burning above 90, and hot flicks lighting up the screen, The Shadow League has its must see movies to set you on a path to disappear and decompress into an air conditioned theater full of feature film offerings. Listed in order by release date, check the lineup below before you go.

1. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Something about this trailer makes many who’ve been fans of the Planet of The Apes story since the 1960s go slightly bananas. As a sequel to the prequel that picks up where the James Franco flick ended, this follow-up features few known stars other than Gary Oldman, Keri Russell, and the monkeys themselves. But other than seeing Caesar and his genetically advanced primate takeover, do we need more?

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Hits Theaters July 11.

2. Sex Tape

Admit it. You know you’ve had a secret sex tape somewhere on your phone or computer that you either deleted or find from time to time when scrolling through old pictures or videos. We couldn’t help chuckling at the premise of a movie about a married couple (Jason Segel & Cameron Diaz) who work to spice up their love life by making a homemade porn. All is good until that video is somehow emailed to the world.

Sex Tape Hits Theaters July 18.

3. Lucy

What’s not to like about seeing sexy Scarlett Johansson kicking ass with Neo-like Matrix abilities? Led by Morgan Freeman (who once again plays the role and voice of reason) this film, about a woman who unwittingly becomes a mutant guinea pig in a secret experiment, looks like one we won’t miss.

Lucy Hits Theaters July 25.

4. Guardians of the Galaxy

We’re down to see any Marvel movie, knowing that at least 8 out of 10 times, they'll deliver. In this latest comic book turned big screen film starring Zoe Saldana, Chris Pratt, Lee Pace, and the celebrity voices of Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper and Josh Brolin, we’re looking forward to catching another Marvelous movie that will hopefully stay true to what was originally in print…hopefully.

Guardians of the Galaxy Hits Theaters August 1.

5) The Expendables 3

This is a no brainer. Big guns, loud bombs, missile blow ups, and the return of Wesley Snipes after his stint in jail? Come on. Starring damn near every action star of past and present, Sylvester Stallone, Jet Li, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mel Gibson, Jason Stratham, Dolph Lundgren, Antonio Banderas, and even old ass Harrison Ford, The Expendables 3 is a definite must see.

The Expendables 3 Hits Theaters August 15.

6) Frank Miller's Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

The graphic novels of Frank Miller have been money makers for the film world. And this newest edition of his Sin City story, directed by Robert Rodriguez, looks fly to watch in black and white with splashes of bright color, gun shots, blood, and sinister evil types like Ray Liotta, Eva Green, Jessica Alba, Josh Brolin, Bruce Willis, Rosario Dawson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and even the brother Dennis Haysbert. The trailer to Sin City: A Dame to Kill For has us interested.

Frank Miller's Sin City: A Dame to Kill For Hits Theaters August 22.
