In the video, Perry said, “I know it’s a hard time, a lot of people are struggling and I’m just really, really grateful to be able to be in a position to do this.” Perry also added that his intention had originally been for his contribution to remain anonymous.
LeMia Jenkins, a Walmart spokeswoman confirmed to CNN that Perry paid off $432,635 worth of layaway items. 1,500 people ordered these items ahead of the holiday season.
In a statement Jenkins said:
Tyler Perry’s generous donation is making an unbelievable difference for so many families, and we can’t thank him enough for his kindness. The heartfelt excitement and joy we’re seeing from our customers as a result of his holiday gift has been touching.”
The company took to Twitter to thank Perry for his generous actions.
