In 2001, the Los Angeles Lakers were the league's most dominant team. On their quest to repeat as world champions, they posted an undefeated record during their playoff run; that is until June 6, 2001. As a heavy underdog, the Philadelphia 76ers walked into the Staples Center with no chance of winning according to basketball experts. However, this theory was completely destroyed by league MVP Allen Iverson, who went off for 48 points in the opening game. On highlight reels, this one is well-known for Iverson's battle with nemesis Tyronn Lue, including the moment in the right corner when Iverson shook Lue, nailed a jumper and then stepped over the fallen Laker.
The Answer had 30 by halftime to stun the L.A. crowd, and rallied again in overtime with a clutch 3-pointer to ice the game in Philly's 107-101 win, finishing off a 13-2 Philadelphia run.
While Iverson got his points in typical A.I. fashion — he launched 41 shots — he also filled his stat sheet with six assists, five steals and only three turnovers. The Sixers would eventually fall short in the series as the Lakers proceeded to impose their will, winning the next four games on their way to becoming back-to-back champions.
But for one night, "The Answer" stood taller than the rest.
