On Thursday, I was at the Society of Illustrators on Manhattan’s Eastside for Visualizing the Words: Comics as Collaboration, an enlightening discussion featuring Shawn Martinbrough of Robert Kirkmans Thief of Thieves with moderation from author & former Marvel editor Daniel Fingeroth.
The discussion centered on the creation of a graphic novel from concept to a finished product. Martinbrough, who has worked with such noted writers as Robert Kirkman, Geoff Johns and Greg Rucka, went in with tales of hardship and triumph that occurred early in his career but which helped him become the artist that he has become today. Fingeroth also interjected with comedic anecdotes highlighting his own experiences as an editor while explaining how editors and artists combine their talents to create a successful book. Check out some footage from this successful event and some samples of Martinbroughs signature style of using contrats and shadows as well.
