This Day In Black Sports History: The Goose Drops 41 to Lead Kentucky to Title

March 27, 1978 – Forward Jack (Goose) Givens scored 41 points to lead the University of Kentucky over Duke, 94-88, at the Checkerdome in St. Louis for the Wildcats' fifth NCAA basketball title but their first in 20 years.

Givens was honored as the NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding player for the 1978 tournament.  He was 18 for 27 from the floor while grabbing eight rebounds in 37 minutes.

Jack Givens is one of only three players to score more than 40 points in an NCAA Championship game. The other two are from John Wooden's UCLA squads, Bill Walton (44 in 1973) and Gail Goodrich (42 in 1965).
