Rand Paul followed through on his promise to visit Howard University. He spoke with several disinterested students in a hot auditorium. While we gave props to Paul for being the one to actually go out and conduct the Republican "autopsy," it's not clear if he made things better or worse.
There are probably going to be a few more awkward encounters like this in the near future, because that's what happens when a population is alienated and ignored. The GOP doesn't know black people at all. Moments like this make that glaringly obvious, but the reaction also teaches the Republican party about what they really need to be doing to earn votes — whether they will actually do it is still unclear.
