On July 4th it was revealed that Holloway (19-3) was hospitalized with concussion-like symptoms and wont compete against Brian Ortega in Saturdays UFC 226 co-main event.

Maxs team and UFC staff noticed Max was not normal since late last week. This became obvious to many watching his interviews and public appearances the past few days,” per Holloway’s management team and ESPN.

He was showing concussion-like symptoms before he even started his weight cut and was rushed to the ER on Monday where they admitted him overnight. Initial scans seemed okay, and he was released Tuesday afternoon, but symptoms still continued.

Max fought with his team to continue with the fight. He showed some improvement over the next day but was still showing obvious symptoms. After open workouts, he crashed and was very hard to wake up. When he did, he had flashes in his vision and slurred speech.

He is now back in the ER for further tests.

The situation continues a brutal 2018 for Holloway who hasn’t been able to get it right for Octagon competition recently. He was forced to withdraw from UFC 222 in March due to injury. He then took a short-notice lightweight title fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 223 in April but was pulled by the New York commission on weigh-in day due to medical concerns related to the weight cut.

Yesterday the main event poster boy and UFC light heavyweight champion, Cormier walked away from a press conference table on stage when he tripped over a speaker near his chair and fell. DC stayed on the ground for a few seconds before getting up. He appeared to walk away with a limp but came back to face off with his opponent, Stipe Miocic, minutes later.

Miocic is the UFC heavyweight champion and Cormier is stepping up in weight to challenge him for the heavyweight strap. If successful, Cormier will be the second fighter to be a two-division world champion simultaneously in the UFC after Conor McGregor. Cormier, the light heavyweight champion, told ESPN that his leg was swollen, but he didn’t think it would affect him ahead of his fight on Saturday but with a challenge as great as Stipe Miocic, concern from his team and the UFC must be on high alert.
