Trust The Process: The 76ers Are No Longer A Laughingstock

For the past four years, the Philadelphia 76ers were the laughingstock of the NBA. With all but trademarking the phrase tanking, the team bought in on the process of constantly stockpiling lottery picks year after year. That is until the pieces ultimately came together, creating a core for the future.

The young nucleus of Markelle Fultz, Ben Simmons, Dario Saric, and Joel Embiid is the payout that diehard fans of the franchise needed to reaffirm their faith. Now they are making waves in free agency, thus marking the arrival of the team of the future.

Over the weekend, sharpshooter JJ Redick agreed to a one-year, $23 million dollar deal with the Sixers. For any other team, this might be overpaying, but for Philly, handing Redick a virtual blank check was a smart play because the core of the roster is comprised of  players on rookie deals, leaving an exorbitant amount of cap space to fill their weaknesses.

Three point shooting has been a constant struggle for the team. Last year they shot 34% from downtown, landing them at 25th in the league. Redick, a career 41% 3-point shooter, is a huge addition. His ability to play off the ball will be effective immediately, since the primary playmaking responsibilities will fall on the shoulders of Fultz and Simmons.

Adding Redick also brings a veteran presence to the young team. Having a mentor to guide an inexperienced team through striving for newfound success is a priceless commodity in the NBA. Jason Terry recently did this with the Milwaukee Bucks, who became a fifth seed in the Eastern Conference Playoffs.

Redick has played on multiple successful teams throughout his career, and his voice will be an integral part of the locker room for the playoff hopeful Sixers.

Redick wasnt the only free agent acquisition though. Amir Johnson was given an $11 million one-year deal to play in Philly next year as well. The former Celtic big man may not be as athletic as he once was, but he can still play quality minutes. Johnson provides lineup depth which is fairly new for this team. Also, it creates the opportunity for a Jahlil Okafor trade, which has been speculated for nearly a year.

This year might not have championship implications for the 76ers, but that future is getting closer. After years of slowly spiraling to the bottom, the organization has once again looked to win. This team is going to be a league pass much watch.
