And so here we are, just two days before the film many critics are already calling the best Spider-Man movie ever made debuts. And thats saying something.
Ten Spider-Man movies have been made before the creation of Spider-Man: Homecoming, dating back to the 1970’s. Other than the very first film and 2002’s Spider-Man starring Tobey McGuire, each of the films and subsequent reboots have been exponentially worse than those that came before it.
Either it was the dispatching of comic book canon in favor of creativity and originality, a miscast actor in a lead role, a super villains laughable motivations for evil or a re-imagined story arc that makes a mockery of the original source material. However, Spider-Man: Homecoming doesnt have any of the problems that dragged down the franchise’s cinematic offerings of days past.
Recently, The Shadow League was in the building for the Spider-Man: Homecoming press junket at the Whitby Hotel in New York City. As a fan of film and of comic books, it was a glorious site to behold as cast members of great and moderate importance to the story arc chomped at the bit to discuss the new MCU addition, and how the film draws from the contemporary social environment to recreate a classic character, but with modern sensibilities.

For most fans, it seemed like Sony would never, ever, EVER relinquish the rights of Spider-Man to a rival film studio..
It was one of a handful of those This will never be possible but lets try moments, said Marvel Studios president Kevin Fiege when asked how the films road to creation began.

By the time the junket occurred, most of the media had already seen Spider-Man: Homecoming and the critics were already raving about it. But the media wasnt alone in its giddiness over the highly-anticipated film.
I just tried to approach it as the biggest fan possible, admitted director John Watts. The opportunity to finally put Spider-Man where he belongs in the Marvel Cinematic Universe really gave us the opportunity to open doors to so many new kinds of stories we could tell. If anything, I feel like we were being as true as possible as anyone has been able to be with Spider-Man and how he fits into this world.
