MLB Brothers Balling: Black Knight Justin Upton Gets Paid

George Springers World Series MVP performance and Aaron Judge’s ridiculous 52-bomb rookie season has catapulted the young guns to the top spots among MLBs African-American diamond-miners in the eyes of those fans and journalists captured by the playoff moment and still wrapped in the euphoria of a memorable Autumn showdown.

In case we forgot, theres a brother named Justin Upton with 256 career homers and four All-star nods in an 11-year career that has something to say about that. Upton, is coming off a season in which he hit 35 dingers and drove in 109 RBIs, and hes not even 30 years old.

Upton was traded from the Detroit Tigers on August 31 for a bag of minor league players. His 27-game audition was good enough for the Los Angeles Angels to sign the Black Knight to a five-year contract worth between $106-$108 million, the team announced on Thursday. The contract runs through 2022.

Upton was the No. 1 ranked prospect in the class of 2005 and he has surpassed his brother Melvin as the best player in the family. The two brothers even got to play together for a brief stint with the Atlanta Braves, as they formed the Soul Patrol with hometown star Jason Heyward back in 2013.

The hierarchy of black excellence in MLB is shared by a number of players, but only one can be the best. With Upton in his prime as a player and Springer still preparing to enter his, we cant forget about the Upton Brother because hes a beast in his own right and an OG holding the Black Knights flag and inspiring young brothers to chase that diamond dream.
