On Monday, September 10th, Fisk University will hold a press conference to announce that they’ve hired former NBA All-Star Kenny Anderson as their new head basketball coach.
Founded in 1866, Fisk is a private, liberal arts university located in Nashville, Tennessee. Consistently recognized for its brand of academic excellence, Fisk is ranked among the Top 10 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) in the 2018 U.S. News & World Report.
Anderson was undeniably New York City’s most revered and celebrated prep star since the incomparable Kareem Abdul Jabbar was known as Lew Alcindor at Power Memorial. Already a certified legend on the playgrounds before reaching puberty, college scouts began flocking to his games in the sixth grade.
Kenny could very well be the best freshman point guard in the history of the college game. While Michigan State’s Magic Johnson, LSU’s Chris Jackson and Indiana’s Isiah Thomas are in the debate, none of them led their teams to the Final Four like Anderson did as a precocious, first-year floor general in 1990.
The left-handed ballhandling wizard averaged 20.6 points, 8.1 assists and 5.5 rebounds while shooting 51.5% from the field, including 41% from beyond the 3-point stripe as the head of the snake for the legendary “Lethal Weapon 3” offensive attack.
He was the second overall pick in the 1991 NBA Draft who went on to play 14 years in the league. But his was far from a fairy tale story. Anderson recently chronicled his life in the documentary “Mr. Chibbs”, pulling back the covers on some of his life’s most painful moments, in addition to the thrills he provided as a point guard savant.

They see what he did right, what he did wrong, and thats why its fascinating to see where he is now, said the film’s director Jill Campbell. He was in a mid-life crisis. Its a universal story. Were all struggling in life, even if youre a basketball prodigy.
When talking about his next steps shortly after the documentary was released, Anderson told the New York Post, “Im trying to figure it all out, what Im gonna do to reinvent myself. Its in my mind every day. Im a work in progress. I want do something I love and have passion for. Im just trying to give hope. I want to give back.”

K.A was that dude the most celebrated point guard to come from N.Y.C and was one of my favorite players when I was a teenager…College recruiters began scouting Anderson in sixth grade and he was on the front page of the New York City sports section when he was 14 he was a four-time Parade All-American, a feat not accomplished since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar…Anderson set the all-time state record for scoring in New York, with 2,621 points Despite winning the ACC title, they entered the NCAA tourney as only a 4 seed.
Maybe I can catch some kids along the way, fighting their own demons, and help turn a kids life around. I think thats my calling. I think I can do that and Ill love it, but sometimes life aint fair. You want to do certain things, and life aint gonna set you up that way. I hope my calling comes.
With this new job as the head basketball coach at Fisk, doing and being around what he loves, he has a great chance to write his next chapter.
