Geno Auriemma Will Cement GOAT Legacy With 1,000th Career Win

Geno Auriemma is an icon. There are no shortage of superlatives for the father of the UConn Womens basketball dynasty; the greatest higher learning hoops program and most dominant in the history of Division I basketball.

Without ever meeting Geno, who is a master recruiter, motivator and agitator, the numbers hes posted as The King of Storrs speak for themselves. Tonight, he goes for his 1,000th career win as a college basketball coach and game-changer. When the buzzer sounds on another Connecticut victory, Auriemma will join Tennessee Universitys late great Pat Summitt, Stanfords Tara VanDerveer and Dukes Mike Krzyzewski as the only other coaches in Division 1 basketball history to reach 1000 career wins.

No. 1 Connecticut takes on Oklahoma in the Basketball Hall of Fame Holiday Showcase at Mohegan Sun. Connecticut leads the American Athletic Conference and is a typical 9-0 this season, with five wins over top-25 teams.

Already a Hall of Famer, Auriemma has built the UConn program brick by brick since his first win back in 1985 against Iona on the road. That was also the last time UCONN had a losing record under Auriemma, who has made a mockery of womens college basketball while raising the standards of every serious program in the country and shifting the balance of power internationally.

Geno has won 88% of his games, 22 conference championships and 11 NCAA championships while producing a flock of WNBA legends. Don’t forget his three Olympic gold medals in 2000, 2012 and 2016 in Rio.

Geno Auriemma Looks For 1000th Career Win

Geno Auriemma tries to get his 1000th career win when #1 UCONN plays Oklahoma on Tuesday night on CBS Sports Network. Matt Yurus reports.

Auriemma cemented his indisputable title as the womens hoops GOAT when he guided UCONN to a 111-game winning streak from November 2014 to April 2017. The last time this program didnt make the Final Four was the 2006-2007 season.

With an embarrassing collection of riches again this season, UConn is the favorite to rebound from last years dramatic Final Four upset and reclaim their position at the top of the college basketball food chain.
