Driven: Le’Veon Bell

Pittsburgh Steelers’ All Pro running back Le’Veon Bell scored a last second touchdown on Monday Night Football, giving the Steelers a 24-20 road victory over the San Diego Chargers.

Steeler Nation erupted as Bell thrust the ball over the plane of the goal line as his knee was going down, celebrating again as the officials confirmed the score after the mandatory scoring replay. The star running back was mobbed by teammates after the play and ESPN interviewed him after the game, flooding him with on air compliments, even getting a hug from Steve Young.

Bell officially arrived in the NFL last year with an amazing season, one that consisted of 1,361 yards rushing, 854 yards receiving, 11 TDs and 0 fumbles. He also won the FedEx Ground Player of the Year and was voted MVP of the team. After being suspended for the first two games of this season, Bell picked up where he left off last season, reminding everyone why he is one of the best players in the league today. Through three games this season, Bell has rushed for over 300 yards, has over 100 yards receiving and has 3 TDs. With Big Ben sidelined due to injury, Michael Vick has taken over under center, but it is Bell who will be carrying the load while their Super Bowl winning quarterback remains sidelined. After Monday night, it’s obvious that Bell has the shoulders to carry the expected workload.

But Bell is more than a football player and he wants that to be known. He’s young and yet he already understands that his value will be measured by what he does in life, not just on the field. He wants to lead by example and prove the doubters wrong through his hard work, dedication and understanding of what his position as a pro athlete actually means.

We sat down with Le’Veon at the annual retreat held by Adisa Bakari, Chair of the Sports Entertainment Group at Kelley Drye, and learned just why the Ohio son, Michigan State Spartan and Pittsburgh Steeler is driven.
