With Steph Curry’s expeditious rise to NBA lure over the past three seasons, the Chef’s popularity has soared among NBA fandom.
As with any prominent star post-1998, the comparisons to His Airness begin to pour in from journalists, experts, and enthusiasts alike. Golden Star Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, Michael Jordan’s teammate from 1995-1998, offered his own take on his two-time reigning MVP point guard and the comparisons to his former teammate.
Prior to Wednesday night’s contest against the Jordan-owned Charlotte Hornets, Kerr noted one distinguishable difference between the two.
“The crowd size is similar, but the biggest difference is the children that gravitate toward Steph. You see so many little kids with Steph jerseys begging for his autograph,” said Kerr.
An interesting opinion coming from a former teammate who saw the Be Like Mike Gatorade campaign that dominated the ’90s.
Kerr also alluded to Curry’s stature and overall non imposing image as a variation among the two basketball deities.
“Hes probably the rare superstar where an 8-year-old kid can go, `He looks just like me. Maybe I can do it,” Kerr said in reference to Curry.
Steph is listed at 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds and scores primarily with his lethal jumper of unlimited range. Jordan was listed at 6-foot-6 and had a playing weight of 218. Jordan, while a very effective shooter who mastered a turn-around fadeaway jump shot, had a game predicated on his freakish athleticism.
Where there is no discrepancy between the two is the unmatched popularity these two have shared during the heights of their careers with the possibility of Steph further plateauing in his quest for more rings.
Even so, it’ll be difficult to ever surpass the GOAT.
