Week 14’s matchup between AFC North rivals, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cincinnati Bengals, got a little too chippy.
The NFL handed out $138,902 in fines to seven different players during last Sunday’s game. Bengals linebacker Vontae Burfict was hit hardest with a $69,454 fine for a low hit to Roethlisberger, a face mask penalty and unnecessary roughness.
Burfict has developed a reputation around the league for playing dirty. He has been fined $77,546 for illegal hits during his career.
“I don’t buy he was pushed,” Roethlisberger said during an appearance on Pittsburgh’s 93.7 The Fan on Tuesday. “I think he was definitely diving low for my legs.”
Steelers’ safety Mike Mitchell was also fined $23,152 for a illegal hit on a defenseless player.
Its clear that these two teams hate each other. With the Pittsburgh Steelers in the mix for a wild card spot, how great would it be if these two teams met in the playoffs with the stakes much higher? They may set a new record for fines, too.
