Sammy Watkins To Ink Three-Year Free Agent Deal With Kansas City

Wide receiver Sammy Watkins will once again hit the reset button on what many NFL fans would consider an underachieving career so far.

The Kansas City Chiefs reportedly reached an agreement with him on a three-year deal in free agency Tuesday, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Rapoport added that Watkins is slated to make “roughly $16 million per year over three years.” The Chiefs will be Watkins’ third team as he enters his fifth season in the league.

The Los Angeles Rams acquired Watkins in an August trade with the Buffalo Bills in exchange for cornerback E.J. Gaines and a 2018 second-rounder.

The 24-year-old former Clemson star was the fourth overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft by the Bills in a draft that boasted Mike Evans, Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry. The Bills tabbed Watkins as the best of them all, but he never reached the All-Pro heights that the franchise envisioned for him, surpassing 1,000 yards receiving just once in his three seasons with Buffalo.

He came to the Rams in 2017 and, despite being part of an improved passing attack, grabbed just 39 catches in 15 games. His per-catch average (15.2 yards) ranked a respectable 15th in the league. His career-high eight touchdown receptions and ability to stretch the field and command attention opened things up for receiver Robert Woods.

Robert Woods NEVER lined up against #1 CB’s! The only reason he’s good is because of Sammy Watkins!!!!!” Mhmm..

Watkins has only played a full 16-game season once in his career. Maybe he can finally put his immense talent together and create some magic with Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid as they rebuild the Kansas City offense.
