Super Bowl XLVIII, coming to you live from MetLife Stadium in New Jersey this Sunday, has announced that Queen Latifah has been bestowed the great honor of performing “America the Beautiful” during the pre-game festivities.
A Newark, NJ native known by the mainstream for her vocals (and seasoned hip hop heads for the rap skills she seems to want us to forget), it makes sense that Queen Latifah would be asked to sing during the event. A master at reinvention, Latifah is now most notably known as not only an actress, but an author and successful talk show host whose CBS daytime show was recently renewed for season two. Performing at the 2014 Grammy Awards, officiating the marriages of 33 couples while singing onstage alongside Macklemore, Ryan Lewis, Mary Lambert, and Madonna – Latifah is now as mainstream as it gets.
Other performers appearing during the broadcast pre-game show include opera singer Renee Fleming, who will sing the National Anthem. And the infamous halftime show with Bruno Mars, accompanied by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. An interesting combo, to say the least…
