Bellator MMA 181 Campos vs. Girtz 3

When Brandon Girtz first faced Derek Campos at Bellator 96 back in 2013, it was the start of something epic. The Minnesota State University Division II wrestler lost the first pairing via unanimous decision, but the fight was so great the rematch was a necessity.

It finally came at Bellator 146 in late 2015 and revenge was all Girtz thought about when he gave Campo a blistering KO 37 seconds into first round. However, there were still unanswered questions. Was the KO a fluke? After all, Campos did UD two years earlier but had lost via submission to Michael Chandler in early 2015. Tonight the rubber match between the two will answer the unknown and decide who truly is the best of the two lightweights.

Also on the card, Kendall Grove and Joe Warren return to action in separate bouts. Both are looking to get back in the win column after knockout losses in their respective bouts.

Boxing: Omar Figueroa, Jr vs. Robert Guerrero and Marcus Browne vs. Seanie Monaghan

Two great boxing battles hit Long Island this weekend, where redemption defines the main event and Empire State supremacy the other. Former lightweight champion Omar Figueroa, Jr. makes his long awaited return to boxing after a 19-month layoff to challenge tough former champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero in the main event.

Omar Figueroa Jr. focused for ring return vs. Robert Guerrero

Unbeaten former 135-lb world champion Omar Figueroa Jr. is prepared to end an 18-month hiatus from the ring on Saturday, July 15, 2017 at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT, when he headlines a PBC on FOX event vs. fellow former champ Robert Guerrero.

Figueroa, Jr. is an enigma in boxing as a former full-ride college athlete that left school to pursue the treacherous world of combat sports. After a few injuries and a need to mentally refresh from the game, he took a hiatus from competition and now returns at a higher weight class against a wily veteran in Guerrero.

Known mainly for his 2015 Fight of the  Year-candidate bout against Nihito Arakawa, Figueroa is a puncher that can trade and take as much punishment as he gives. In a fight with Guerrero, this skill set will be a necessity as a brawler who is known to make his matches bloody and up close. Fighters like Keith Thurman and Danny Garcia made their names off defeating “The Ghost”, and for a return fight for Figueroa, Jr., it will be a true challenge in a new division.

Fighter of the Week: Marcus Browne

Undefeated 175-pound contender Marcus Browne (19-0, 14 KOs), of Staten Island, NY, returns to the ring next Saturday, July 15, when he faces former sparring partner Seanie Monaghan (28-0, 17 KOs), of Long Island, in an all-New York showdown on FOX at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT. Visit PremierBoxingChampions.com for info.

In the co-main event, “Irish” Seanie Monaghan takes on “Sir” Marcus Browne in the battle of the unbeaten’s. The two light heavyweights have been the faces of New York City boxing their whole careers and have avoided facing each other. However, with a potential title shot on the line the two are putting friendships to the side for business.

Besides a controversial split decision win against Radivoje Kalajdzic for Browne last year, this will truly be the toughest fight for each competitor, who have both long waited for a world title shot. With potential match-ups against Andre Ward or Adonis Stevenson in one of their futures, this fight will match or even surpass the intensity of the main event.

MMA: UFC Fight Night

The UFC welterweight division also has some killers not named Nate Diaz or a moonlighting Conor McGregor, and this weekend they headline from Scotland.

Icelandic fighter, Gunnar Nelson returns quickly, having just fought in March, to face Santiago Ponzinibbio. Nelson is currently on a two fight win streak, having submitted his last two opponents both in the second round.  With only two respectable losses to top competitors Rick Story and Demian Maia, Nelson is trying to make a case for ascension amid the welterweight ranks where Tyron Woodley sits atop high.

Catch all the action live from The SSE Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland on FS1 at 3 pm EST /12 pm PST.
