Nick Saban is hot on the recruiting trail trying to land his best class of offensive line recruits since he arrived at Alabama, but first he needs a quarterback for them to protect. He may have found what the mob calls a “made man” in Florida State backup Larry Jacob Coker.
According to Coker's high school coach Steve Mask, Coker was granted his release from Florida State and on Tuesday afternoon he received an in-home visit from Nick Saban. It's another sign that Coker will ultimately succeed AJ McCarron as the starting quarterback for the second time in his young football career. Coker was also a quarterback at St. Paul's in Mobile, Alabama, the school which produced McCarron. McCarron's backup Blake Sims, four-star 2014 recruit David Cornwell and Alec Morris are currently in the running for the starting gig, now that Luke Del Rio has transferred, but if Coker touches down in Tuscaloosa, he'll immediately become the frontrunner.
One of Alabama's graduating receivers, Kevin Norwood actually let the cat out of the bag last week during a radio interview.
"(Luke) Del Rio just left. He was a pretty good quarterback," Norwood told Tide 99.1 The Game with Ryan Fowler on Friday. "Then you have a guy coming in from Florida State, a 6-5 guy. I don't know too much about him. But I heard good things about him."
Earlier this month, Coker said the rumors were nothing more than speculation.
On Tuesday, he was asked about that statement.
"Yeah, well, I thought everybody knew," Norwood told WNSP Sports Radio 105.5 FM. "I really did. I thought everybody knew.
"I thought everybody knew he was coming. I didn't know I was putting him on the spot or did anything like that."
