Boxing was off to an amazing pace this year, still rejoicing over the ratings and attendance record setting Thurman vs. Garcia fight this past weekend. Today the sport his a little bump in the road as fans learned that the Manny Pacquiao vs. Amir Khan fight just went up in smoke.
Originally scheduled for April 22nd in the United Arab Emirates, Top Rank Promoter Bob Arum let everyone know that the “pie in the sky” fight was off, mostly because of unrealistic monetary expectations. That expectation? $38 million for Pacquiao to fight the former English light welterweight champion, Amir Khan.
“When they contacted me, I told them it was pie in the sky, that this is crazy, its not going to happen, Arum said. Manny wanted to roll the dice. He rolled the dice and it came up snake eyes.
If something is too good to be true, its too good to be true.
Arum said the outlandish sum made no sense, adding that a Pacquiao-Khan bout could be revisited with realistic numbers in the fall.
Putting the nail in the coffin Arum stated That deal is done for now. [Pacquiao and Koncz] were talking to the wrong people.
So that means that Khan, who was last seen getting knocked out by Canelo last year, won’t fight until the latter half of 2017.
But it’s still all good for boxing because the first five months of the year are packed, with more to come.
