Janet Jackson didnt get a second shot, but Justin Timberlake is getting another crack at his Super Bowl dance. Remember back in 2004, when the 36-year-old singer and the legendary sister of Michael Jackson performed at halftime of Super Bowl XXXVIII?
Nobody watching will ever forget the controversy caused when Timberlake ripped off part of Jackson’s top during the singing of “Rock Your Body in the infamous incident now know an “Nipplegate.”

It was a show of female empowerment that would probably be more vigorously defended these days, but America has a tendency to hop on a moral high ground that doesn’t actually exist in reality in this country and it inspired a heated debate on indecency vs. free speech and became the hot topic for media and sports talk shows across the country. Janet Jackson was unfathomably somehow made out to be a villain by many people.
It was a planned move that backfired on Jackson and Timberlake because of the supposed family friendly atmosphere of the Super Bowl festivities and CBS was fined $550,000 by the Federal Communications Commission for indecency over the incident, but the penalty was later overturned. As is the curse and reward of dabbling in the indecent in America, the incident brought both some public ribbing but increased their fame exponentially. YouTube co-founder Jawed Karim says that the after effects of “Nipplegate” was what led to the creation of the video sharing website. The incident also made “Janet Jackson” the most searched term, event and image in internet history, as well as the most searched person and term of 2004 and 2005, breaking the record for “most searched event over one day.”
It helped solidify the Super Bowl’s stronghold as America’s most viewed sports event and is still considered the most memorable Super Bowl moment. People can’t stop talking about it.
David Letterman talks with Janet about the SUPERBOWL but Janet didn’t want to talk about it but David kept harping on it!
At the same time, the wardrobe incident scared the NFL into barring MTV from any involvement in Super Bowl halftime performances in the future. MTV’s Chief Executive stated in an interview with Reuters that Jackson engineered the stunt without clearing it, while Timberlake was informed of it just moments before he took the stage, which, in the eyes of some critics exonerated Timberlake from the situation. The exposure was broadcast to a total audience of 143.6 million viewers.
Fourteen years later after the infamous wardrobe malfunction Timberlake has been invited back to headline the halftime show for Super Bowl LII in Minneapolis on Feb. 4, the league announced Sunday.
This year will be Timberlake’s third Super Bowl halftime performance, the most for any entertainer, according to The Associated Press. In 2001, he performed as part of the smash boy band “N Sync.
Timberlake tweeted out the news with help from Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon.
I DO have the time. Half the time…#PepsiHalftime #SBLII @Pepsi @NFL @JimmyFallon @FallonTonight https://t.co/4Z4Dz29l3X
As did the NFL.
Minnesota. @SuperBowl LII. February 4, 2018. @jtimberlake! #PepsiHalftime #SBLII
Fans are wondering what shock treatment Timberlake may have in store for this Super Bowl, but the iconic pop-soul singer says “That won’t happen this time,” when asked about the incident in an interview aired during NBC’s “Sunday Night Football.”
Of course not. Timberlake could never duplicate the impact and career-enhancing effect that he and Jackson created when they teetered the line of indecent exposure and groundbreaking entertainment strategy. It was her watershed moment and his global unveiling , shedding the innocent, lollipop boy band label and re-introducing himself to the world as a grown as man doing grown as man things.
