The San Francisco 49ers have hired John Lynch as their new general manager.
His hiring swiftly fills the Niners’ void at GM following the termination of Trent Baalke after the team posted a 2-14 record this season.
Lynch was an analyst at FOX prior to his hiring and an NFL standout for 15 seasons as a strong safety with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Denver Broncos. His career highlights include a Super Bowl XXXVII win in 2003, nine Pro Bowl selections, and being name a three-time All-Pro.
The 49ers still have a void to fill at head coach after firing Chip Kelly. Owner Jed York spoke on his ideological views of hiring a head coach and general manager, saying, “We need to make sure that the head coach and the general manager know each other, have a good understanding for each other. It doesn’t mean that they had to have worked together in the past, but they have to have a good respect for each other and a good understanding and know that they have similar visions and philosophies on building a football team.”
Many in the NFL community are aghast at the hire, as Lynch has no organizational experience in a front office capacity.
