Howard Was A 45 Point Underdog So They Went Out And Beat UNLV

This was quite a weekend in college football, especially in the HBCU landscape.

First FAMU gets penalized for a uniform infraction before the game kicks off. Then Tennessee State stuns Georgia State 17-10 for their first win in school history against an FBS program.

Then in FBS land, Maryland upends Texas in Austin and Liberty beats Baylor, the latter of which has to be the stunner of the weekend.

But not so fast college football fans, because the mighty Bison of Howard University still had to play UNLV in the desert Saturday night.

Howard, with new head coach Mike London, was a 45-point underdog and was headed west for a “Pay for Play” game against the Running Rebels. So most expected a predictable outcome and probably weren’t paying much attention to this game. But a little before midnight on the East Coast, Twitter lit up from the Nation’s Capital, and it had nothing to do with Trump.

With the 43-40 victory in Las Vegas, Howard probably just pulled off the biggest (statistical) upset in college football history. A 45-point underdog and yet they came out on top. Behind Caylin Newton’s 140 yards passing, 190 rushing and three total touchdowns, the Bison blew everyone’s minds; well at least those that had some of their minds left after the aforementioned Liberty upset.

Back to Newton. Ever heard of that name before? You should as it also refers to Cam Newton, for Caylin is his little brother and he went off in Mike London’s first game as Howard’s new head coach.

The Bison players went wild after the game’s final play, and rightfully so. For a team to have to travel across the country, listed as a 45-point underdog and be looked at as a “bye week” type of opponent, they deserve to celebrate.

Oh, and about that “Pay for Play” deal? In the words of Ice Cube, “Today was a good day” for Howard University and their football team.
