Good Morning: The 400-Yard Passing Game Doesn’t Mean Jack

The 400-yard passing game is no longer special. On Sunday, Mike Vick, Phillip Rivers and Aaron Rogers made NFL history by each throwing for 400 yards without an interception, the first time three QBs have ever accomplished the feat on the same day. In the era of run and gun, as receivers can barely be touched or hit, the passing game is king in the regular season.

Here is the NFL roundup:

Whistling, possibly from the crowd in Seattle, imitated the play-stopping whistle of the refs, confused Seattle and allowed San Fran to block a punt. 49ers DE Ian Williams broke his ankle on a questionable block in the first quarter.

The Philadelphia Eagles racked up 511 yards, but lost 33-30 to San Diego, who gained 539 yards and, more importantly, had the ball last.

Drew Brees led the New Orleans Saints in the fourth quarter, culminating in a 27-yard field goal that put the Saints ahead 16-14 as time expired, the second such loss in a row for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Josh Freeman will reportedly seek a trade.

EJ Manuel cried on the sideline following his first victory for the Buffalo Bills. Mario Williams was very excited after sacking Cam Newton 4.5 times.

Big Bro maintained his undefeated record against little bro in the Manning Bowl.

RG3 says he can be a "stern leader" if necessary. Meanwhile, some Redskins fans are calling for Kirk Cousins after an 0-2 start.

Reggie Bush needs an MRI on his right knee as the Lions lost to Arizona yet again.

The Houston Texans had another storming comeback, this time against the Tennessee Titans in OT. Andre Johnson suffered a possible concussion

Falcons RB Steven Jackson went down with a thigh injury in the first quarter and did not return. The Falcons held on to beat the Rams.

Jadeveon Clowney says he needs surgery to remove bone spurs in his right foot. Though the injury is painful, Clowney will wait until after the season.

The Boston Red Sox honored Mariano Rivera before his final game at Fenway Park, in which the Red Sox completed their sweep of the Yankees.

Kobe Bryant says he tried to pull his torn Achilles tendon up so he could finish the game. Insane.

CJ Ross, the same judge who ruled that Tim Bradley beat Manny Pacquiao, called Mayweather-Alvarez a draw, another dubious decision.

On the fifth year anniversary of the economic collapse, President Obama will discuss progress made during that time. Though the economy has recovered, it is taking it's time getting all the way back, as more people now consider themselves lower class.

Gun control activists and gun rights activists are digging in for a major political fight in 2014.

As the deal struck between Russia, the US and the UN that will dismantle Syria's chemical weapons, the deflated rebels, and outside forces, acknowledge that Bashar al-Assad isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Thus far, whenever Assad has won a political victory, he has intensified strikes against his opponents.

An Indian-American from New York won the Miss American pageant, starting a whirlwind of racism on Twitter.

What followed was a rather appalling display of ignorance and hate, from comments linking her to terrorism, to references about convenience stores, and cries that Miss America should be more “American.”

But Davuluri has graciously dismissed the haters: “I have to rise above that,” she said. “I always viewed myself as first and foremost American.”

Thankfully the days of peroxide blonde barbie dolls dominating the pageant are long gone, with two of the runners up this year, Crystal Lee and Rebecca Yeh, boasting Asian roots. And this really shouldn’t be a surprise given that white children have fallen into the minority of those born in the U.S., according to the latest census data.

It took about an hour for the rest of the Twittersphere to drown out the bigots, with many applauding the choice of Davuluri, who ran on the platform “celebrating diversity through cultural competency.”
