The debut of Sasheer Zamata on Saturday Night Live wasn’t one in which she was thrown into random sketches just for the sake of it. Zamata did appear in several hilarious skits. Her Rhianna impersonation certainly gave a full-throated chuckle. And although she didn’t have many speaking parts, she did get plenty of shine featured alongside SNL host and musical guest Drake.
But Drake stole the show, staying over the top funny throughout his hosting gig. His portrayal of shamed baseball player Alex Rodriguez in SNL’s opening skit was classic. And a skit about a frustrated Disney worker trying to deal with a contest winner who doesn’t speak English might go down as one of the funniest guest skits in the last five years, ranking up there with Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning’s hilarious guest stint back in 2007. Sometimes we just plain ol’ forget that he was a halfway decent actor on Degrassi. But with comedy often considered as one of the most difficult forms of acting, based on instinct and timing, Drake proved that his acting chops rank as high as his hip hop talent.
In Zamata's case, this was only the beginning of her work with SNL. We hope to see more in upcoming weeks.
