In what seemed like a scene out of a movie, The Captain returned to the Bronx after his second stint on the DL, and hit a home run on the first pitch he saw. Jeter's round-tripper was the first by a Yankees right-handed hitter since June 25th, as he proved that he can still be a difference maker at the age of 39. Jeter started at shortstop for the first time this season and his presence in the lineup seemed to provide an emotional lift for his teammates.
Via CBSSports: "He's the face of the organization," Soriano said. "When he's on the field we can feel the energy."
With the Yankees 7.5 games out of first place, they're going to need more performances like this from their leader. However, at age 39, he should not be relied upon to be a savior. With the possibility of Curtis Granderson returning this week, the time is now for the Bronx Bombers to make their playoff push.
