Even if you aren't a college football recruiting aficionado, you may know who Da'Shawn Hand is from the video of him bodyslamming a ball carrier that appeared on SportsCenter's Top-10 back in January. On Thursday the 6-4, 254-pound defensive end, who is No.1 in Rivals.com rankings, gave his unofficial commitment to the University of Alabama. Hand was also considering Florida and Michigan, which many believed was the strongest contender.
Via ESPN:
"The campus life is amazing," Hand said. "I know half the team already. The coaching staff is amazing. Why not go where it's a great possibility you could win a national championship?
"When I took my visit, I took two visits. I got to see what the campus life is outside of football season as well as my official. I saw how the game-day atmosphere is, the culture. They have a winning tradition. They don't lie to you. I know when I go in I won't be No. 1 on the depth chart."
He certainly won't be promised anything at Alabama, which has had the No.1 ranking for a few years running and already has the No. 1 2014 class and the No. 1 ranking in the BCS. The defense will be fine next season. It'll be more interesting to see how well or poorly Alabama performs after they break-in a new quarterback on the offensive end next season
