Cam Newton, like any other starting quarterback in the NFL, is only one crushing, blind-side hit away from a head injury and potentially lengthy absence — the Panthers greatest fear. But as a youngster, the thought of getting a bruise from a 60 mph fastball was what got Cam shakin' in his cleats.
In an interview with ESPN The Magazine, the Panthers' stud said he quit baseball when he was 14 because he was afraid of the pitches.
"The kids started getting better and throwing faster, and it would've hurt getting hit by that ball, so I stopped playing," Cam told ESPN's Carmen Thompson.
Getting hit by a pitch would hurt, sure; but more than a hit from a 300-plus pound defensive tackle? I doubt it. Newton isn't scared of taking shots in football, though. Especially if it results in getting in the endzone. That's something that could definitely strike fear in undersized corners.
