Off the hip hop scene, Rapper Akon has been setting his sights socially and politically by launching an impressive environmental project in his native Africa called the Akon Lighting Africa campaign. The star has partnered with charity officials and local corporations to equip one million households across the continent with solar panels to provide electricity and promote energy sufficiency. He plans to finish by the end of this year.
During his recent nine-country tour in Africa, the rapper met with top politicians in his native Senegal, along with Mali, Guinea, Gambia, Gabon, and Burkina Faso for support. When asked on Twitter how the plans are coming along, Akon said, "Incredible! We are getting a great response from many of the leaders I met with. We've got to keep up the momentum.”
