The Arizona Wildcats men’s basketball program has a long history of success getting guards to the next level via the NBA draft. However, as many can attest, there is never a guarantee that a player will work out in quite the same manner as envisioned. For every Mike Bibby there’s a Miles Simon, for every Jason Terry, a Salim Stoudemire.
Currently, Deandre Aytonis getting all the lion’s share of the press leading up to the NBA draft, rightfully so as a projected No. 1 overall pick. But some observers are saying that guard Rawle Alkins, a 6-foot-5, 220 pound guard from New York City projected to go in the second round, just might be the steal of 2018.
Right now, Alkins projects as a 3-and-D player, meaning he can hit the 3-pointer and defend his position well. But he believes he’s more than capable of doing other things.

Alkins helped his stock considerably in the NBA draft combine last year, scoring 18 points in 21 minutes as he tested the waters before returning for his sophomore season. DraftExpress scouts said the former freshman Wildcat showed an assertiveness that many draft candidates largely lacked on day one.

There is indeed a lot to like about Alkins, and there is something to be said about how every year, a talented player who’s ready to contribute on the next level slips into the second round or isn’t drafted at all.
Names like Draymond Green, Manu Ginobili and Jordan Bell immediately come to mind. Each of them came in with the attitude that they belonged in the NBA and competed for minutes almost from day one.
And Alkins isn’t lacking in confidence either, which will definitely bode well for his transition to the next level.
