It wasnt that long ago that Vice President Mike Pence, as well as the rest of the Trump administration, were lambasting American athletes for using their platform to bring attention to struggles that are dear to them. But in October, Pence did a full pivot when he used a game between the Indianapolis Colts and the San Francisco 49ers as a platform to air his disdain for athletes who protest. Ergo, he used that game to make a political statement just the sort of thing he and his boys had been complaining bout ever since Colin Kaepernick took his first knee.
Hes continuing his shenanigans at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. According to reports, Pence refused to interact with the North Korean representative at the games, Kim Yo Jong, sister of Kim Jung Un, or nominal head of state Kim Yong Nam, who was seated a row behind him.
Additionally, the vice president only stood for Team USA, making sure to remain seated when the combined teams of North and South Korea appeared together. Wow, so even the fairy tale idea of a unified Korean peninsula gets no play?
The games are taking place amid an international standoff over North Korea’s nuclear weapons, but I thought the official role of the Olympics was for us to have a place where we leave all that stuff at home? Apparently not.
