The Jets are set to release seven-time All-Pro Darrelle Revis. Revis, who turns 32 this summer was drafted in the first round in 2007 and quickly became the games premier shutdown corner, gaining the name Revis Island for the way he single-handedly lured receivers into his domain and left them stranded without a catch.
Revis played with the Jets from 2007-2012, he left and eventually won a Super Bowl with the arch-rival Patriots. The Jets overpayed for Revis to return in 2015-16, but he was a shell of his former self and endured criticism and ridicule for most of the season.
With Revis four felony charges pending from a reported altercation with two men, in early February, the Jets saw that situation as the perfect excuse to rid themselves of the deteriorating superstar. The business-minded Revis, known for his calm demeanor and pro has undoubtedly suffered the worst season of his illustrious career.
Jets owner Woody Johnson released the following statement: Darrelle Revis is one of the greatest players to ever wear a Jets uniform…he will always have a home with the Jets.
The NFL is a business and Revis knows this better than anyone. Revis cap hit for 2017 was $15.3 million, which is second among cornerbacks behind Carolina lock up artist Josh Normans $20 million.
Hell be back in Jersey one day with all of the fanfare and honor he deserves, but it will never again be as a star player on Gang Green or the face of the franchise.
