Sisters Venus and Serena Williams are set to duel each other for the Australian Open final.
The stage is set for the first showdown between the two sisters since the 2009 Wimbledon in which older sister Venus won. That match also happened to be her last major final appearance.
Venus secured her placement in the final with a 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-3 win over Coco Vandeweghe, who was the favorite in a match that lasted 2 hours and 26 minutes. Venus also became the oldest woman to reach the Australian Open final at age of 36.
Serena, 35, locked the matchup in place by making short work of Mijana Lucic-Baroni with a 6-2, 6-3 victory. The dismantling lasted a mere 50 minutes. Serena then spoke on her anticipation for her match with Venus.
“A total inspiration,” said Serena. “My big sister, she’s basically my world and my life. I was so happy for her, really. For us both to be in the final is the biggest dream come true for us.”
Venus has taken home seven Grand Slam titles while Serena has an astonishing 22 titles to her name.
“I just feel like no matter what happens, we’ve won,” Serena said.
