Two of the dopest pound-for-pound and skilled fighters in the game are less than two months away from executing what many feel will be a contender for Fight of the Year and will almost certainly end in a knockout.
Unified Middleweight World Champion (WBC, WBA, IBF, IBO) Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) spent twenty-four hours in New York City last week to promote his highly anticipated showdown with WBA Middleweight Champion and Mandatory Challenger Daniel “The Miracle Man” Jacobs (32-1, 29 KOs) set for Saturday, March 18 at The Mecca of Boxing, Madison Square Garden.
Heres “GGG” at the Knicks game getting his promo on and politikan with all of the big dawgs.
Despite his undefeated record and distinguished knockout ratio, “GGG” has been unable to catapult into the category of “major draw.” His Kazakhstani roots and lack of English probably contribute to his surprisingly moderate marketability, but “GGG” and his team are hoping that this HBO pay-per-view bout with Daniel Miracle Man” Jacobs will provide the drama, excitement and energy to lift one or both fighters into a higher pay grade and more shine.
GGG has been heavy on his promotions, particularly in NY, as Jacobs, who resides across the bridge from MSG in Brooklyn, has claimed to have an advantage because he’s fighting in his “hometown.” If Golovkin is going to begin his ascent to bonafide boxing superstar, he’s got to capture the hearts of New York boxing fans first.
