Yesterday, The Shadow League spoke with three of the Braxton Sisters as they prepared for Season 5 of Braxton Family Values, which premieres on Thursday, May 19th at 9pm on WEtv.
The Braxton Sisters are an iconic African-American family of talented siblings, who first came into prominence as an R&B group consisting of Tamar, Towanda, Traci, Trina and Toni Braxton.
Toni, the eldest sister, blazed the trail for her four younger sisters. The husky-voiced, sexy soulstress got her big break when songwriter Bill Pettaway of Milli Vanilli fame overheard her singing to herself at a gas station, and then helped helped Braxton land a record deal with Arista. Her career skyrocketed in 1992 when she was asked to to fill in for Anita Baker and sing on the soundtrack for the film Boomerang.
The following year, Braxton released her debut self-titled album to critical acclaim, dropping funky, heartfelt soul ballads for singles like “You Mean the World to Me” and “Breathe Again.” She hit the pulse of every woman or man desperately embroiled in a helpless love triangle with “Love Shoulda Brought You Home.”
She later knocked it out the park with “Un-Break My Heart,” included on her second studio album, Secrets in 1996
In addition to her successful recording career, Braxton has acted and blitzed Broadway. She made history in September of 1998 when she became first black actress to play Belle in the Broadway production of Beauty and the Beast. But it was her musical success that opened the door for her talented sisters to also receive a record deal with Arista.
The sisters then parlayed the success and notoriety they received in the music industry and embarked on various, ever-evolving life journeys. Some of their most intimate, heartbreaking, triumphant and challenging life experiences have been captured on their hit reality show Braxton Family Values, which debuted in April of 2011.
