This morning Serena Williams added to her already impressive resume.
With a 6-3, 7-6 (5) victory over Maria Sharapova, her 16th straight win over Sharapova, Williams secured her sixth Australian Open and won her 19th Grand Slam title; all of this while fighting a cold and hacking cough.
At 33 years old, Williams is now the oldest winner of the Australian women’s title in the Open era and is now in second place on the list of major winners in the era, trailing only Steffi Graf’s 22 wins. The win also moved her ahead of tennis legends Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert, who had 18 grand slam single titles.
“I’m so honored to be here tonight and to hold this 19th trophy (at) my favorite stadium.” said Williams.
Despite the cold and a rain delay that forced organizers to close the roof, Serena stayed focused on the duty at hand, winning six straight points en route to capturing the win.
