UFC light heavyweight champion Jon "Bones" Jones has tested positive for benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine, and checked himself into a rehabilitation clinic following the positive test result. The substance is only banned during competition and since this was an out of competition test, the result of his five round, unanimous decision over Daniel Cormier last Saturday night will stand. UFC President Dana White stated "I'm confident that he'll emerge from this program like the champion he truly is."
New UFC sponsor Reebok has released a statement fully supporting Jones, "We commend Jon for taking the necessary steps to address this issue, and we will support him in any way we can. The status of Jon's relationship with Reebok has not changed." Only time will tell how this affects the momentum Jones was experiencing with his latest victory.
While there exists some debate as to the timing of the test, the UFC's drug testing policies and who was benefitting from the money involved in the pay-per-view event, there is no debate about Jones' skill in the ring, He currently has the third most title defenses in history and is the youngest UFC champion in history.
Let's hope that he will emerge victorious in his latest battle as he enters rehab.
