Tony Award winning Broadway musical After Midnight will give its final performance at the end of June. This will mark a bittersweet end to Black Music Month and the closing of yet another Broadway show with a predominantly black cast.
After Midnight features the music of jazz legend Duke Elllington, during his time at the famed New York Cotton Club. Performed by a 17-piece band, with the poetry of Langston Hughes, Patti LaBelle recently joined the show’s roster of special guest star vocalists, which have included Fantasia, k.d. lang, Toni Braxton, Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds, and Vanessa Williams.
Nominated for seven 2014 Tonys, the musical took home the award for best choreography earlier this month. It also won two Drama Desk Awards, four Astaire Awards, and the Outer Critics Circle Award for best choreography.
LaBelle will appear through the musical’s final performance on June 29, which will conclude the show’s eight month run which began with previews last October.
