Nnamdi Asomugha is returning to the west coast for the same reason he went to the east coast to play for the Philadelphia Eagles two seasons ago: To win a Super Bowl.
Asomugha, who was one of the best defensive backs in the NFL before his two disappointing seasons in Philly, was released by the Eagles and has signed with the defending NFC Champion San Francicso 49ers for a mere $1.35 million. With bonuses, Asomugha can earn up to three mil, small change for a man who was supposed to cash a $15 million check in 2013.
"He's excited to be a 49er and feels it's a great football team, and he's returning home," representative Ben Dogra told ESPN in a phone interview. "It's such a unique set of circumstances that he's coming back. It's not about the money for him. He wants to play for a winner. He had a very good visit with them 10 days ago and again over the weekend. He thinks they have a great chance to win a Super Bowl and he wants to be part of it. He has a chip on his shoulder, in a good way."
It's a huge win for the 49ers, who were three points away from spoiling Ray Lewis' retirement in February. They've made a few big moves since then, trading QB Alex Smith but acquiring Colt McCoy, flipping a sixth round pick for WR Anquan Boldin and signing DT Glenn Doresy. They are certainly a favorite in the NFC and will have their eyes on a more successful return trip to the Super Bowl.
