“This City Done Seen Too Many Cowards” | Cam Newton Hints At Retirement After Bucs Loss

Cam Newton might have played his last game in Charlotte in front of the Panthers hometown fans.

The Panthers quarterback gave the media and the world a point of reflection after a 32-6 home loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Newton, who has been on a rollercoaster ride of emotions since his return to professional sports, hit a fever pitch with the loss.

Now people want to know if he will stay in the game.

“I don’t know,” Newton said, answering the question of his future.

Cam Newton returned to the NFL back to the franchise he helped build to the excitement of his countless fans. Nostalgia aside, Newton’s wish was granted after his release from the New England Patriots in exchange for rookie player Mac Jones.

Then on Nov. 11, 2021, Newton signed a one-year deal worth up to $10 million to return to Carolina. Newton’s re-hiring seemed fortuitous and hopeful for a franchise needing a spark after an injury to starting quarterback Sam Darnold. Reportedly, Newton’s deal included $4.5 million that is fully guaranteed and a $1.5 million roster bonus.

The Return

The return began gloriously. Newton scored a pair of touchdowns on his first two plays back at his Charlotte homecoming.

However, after only a few weeks, Newton stares straight into the reality of where his career currently resides.

“As far as this being my last go-round, now, I don’t I feel like that; for more reasons than one,” he said. “But yet, it’s nothing to belabor the fact. You are looking at a man, and I say that pridefully because I can say this and I can say that, yeah you know what you right, yeah you know, but what does that do besides be the front of the Charlotte Observer, ESPN.com, you know the news.

“This city done seen too many cowards, let’s just be honest. We need real people to step up to the opportunity, players, coaches, front office, owners and take it personal, take it personal because I do. I want to be a part of this for the future but at the end of the day, you know as a man you’ve just got to accept whatever role that you get.”

The Newton Difference

In his 11th year as a quarterback, Newton hasn’t been the difference maker for the Panthers. The team is struggling at 5-10, with Newton completing seven of his 13 throws for 61 yards and an interception against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

Now it seems Newton paved the way for a heralded Sam Darnold return.

Newton completed 69 of his 126 throws (54.8 percent) for 684 yards, four touchdowns two five picks over six outings. Although he rushed for 183 yards and a team-high five scores on 41 carries, his passing results in Carolina have left much to be desired.

However, Newton’s deal is coming to an end at the current season’s finale. For a man who has always felt in control of his NFL destiny, the professional football prospects for Newton seem as obscure as ever; for Superman, that is equivalent to kryptonite.
