Critically acclaimed director Ava DuVernay’s next project might be her most important work to date.

When They See Us, a Netflix miniseries focusing on the infamous 1989 NY jogger case, where five Black and brown teenage boys were wrongfully accused and arrested for raping a white woman in Central Park, just dropped.

Based on a true story that gripped the country, When They See Us will chronicle the notorious case of five teenagers of color, labeled the Central Park Five, who were convicted of a rape they did not commit.

Fans of Ava’s filmography will immediately glean that When They See Us has a darker tone. It is revealed from the trailer’s beginning that we’re a witness to a crime of severe injustice.

Featuring an ensemble cast that includes Michael Kenneth Williams, Kylie Bunbury, Storm Reid, Blair Underwood and more, we can’t wait to see what DuVernay’s take is on the chilling cover up.

When They See Us will be released on May 31, 2019 on Netflix.
