Jackie Robinson established his baseball legacy the moment he took the field for the Brooklyn Dodgers, opening the game up to people of all races and backgrounds. He then played his way into the Hall of Fame without getting much help from some of his teammates and no love from opposition.
He was also a legend off the field. A target no matter where he went, Robinson was encouraged, motivated and supported by Dodgers' GM Branch Rickey, played in the film by Harrison Ford. Rickey pushed Robinson to turn the other cheek no matter how low the rest of society would stoop.
The biopic "42" comes out on April 12 and takes a look at both his on-field accomplishments and his off-the-field torment.
