Senior Bill Russell led the University of San Francisco to its second straight NCAA title with an 83-71 victory over Iowa. Russell scored 26 points and pulled down 27 rebounds as the Dons won their 55th straight game, which was the collegiate record at the time.
Legendary UCLA coach John Wooden called Russell "the greatest defensive man I've ever seen". During his career at USF, Russell averaged 20.7 points per game and 20.3 rebounds per game.
