This Saturday will be the 112th time that Oklahoma and Oklahoma State have played one another. Although the Sooners own a lopsided edge in the series, winning 85 times, the Cowboys have steadily been climbing in national prominence over the last few years. And with both teams harboring dreams of being selected for the College Football Playoffs, this year’s game promises to be a doozy.

Oklahoma now sits at No.5 in the playoff rankings while Oklahoma State is No.11. Both teams come in with 7-1 records and perched atop the Big 12 standings in a four-way tie alongside Iowa State and TCU.
Sooner quarterback Baker Mayfield is nearing the conclusion of what has been a remarkable career. He’ll go down in history with a stupendous overall resume that places him among the greatest college football players ever.
Thus far this year, he’s completing an insane 72.5% of his passes and has thrown for 2,628 yards and 23 touchdowns, with only three interceptions. His counterpart on the opposite sideline, Oklahoma State’s Mason Rudolph, is no slouch either, leading the entire country with 2,866 passing yards to go along with 22 TD passes of his own.

If you love offensive firepower, this matchup is not to be missed as the Sooners average 586.1 yards per game to lead the nation. Oklahoma State ain’t too far behind with 569.3.
On defense, Oklahoma’s main man is defensive end/linebacker and pass-rushing demon Ogbonnia Okoronkwo, who should wreck OSUs suspect offensive line while becoming intimately acquainted with Rudolph. When the Cowboys are on D, keep your eyes on sophomore linebacker Calvin Bundage, especially when Mayfield scrambles out of the pocket.
Oklahoma State has the better defense this year and they looked very good in stifling West Virginia’s potent attack last week. The high water mark for the Sooners defense was holding Ohio State in check, but they’ve vacillated between just being decent to being downright terrible ever since. Both teams will have their hands full, as they’ll both be facing the best offense they’ve seen this year.

This rivalry always means something to both schools, but it takes on extra layers of importance when Oklahoma State is really good, which they are this year. Add in the fact that it’s essentially a playoff elimination game, and we’ve got the makings of what could be a classic barn burner.
Last year, Mayfield passed for 288 yards and three touchdowns as Oklahoma defeated Oklahoma State 38-20 in a matchup that decided the Big 12 champion. Expect him to play another spectacular game, but this time, the score should be a lot closer.
At this point, both teams cannot afford another loss if they want to keep their national title hopes alive. Sounds like a good recipe for some Bedlam to ensue.
