In his final college game, Navy's David Robinson scored a career-high 50 points against the University of Michigan in the 1987 NCAA Tournament, while also holding UM's starting center scoreless. He made 22 of his 37 field-goal attempts and chipped in 13 rebounds. Unfortunately the Midshipmen came up on the wrong end, losing the first round of the East Regionals 97-82.
''He is the best basketball player that I have seen in seven years as a head basketball coach, and I've seen a lot of great players, including Patrick Ewing,'' said Michigan's coach, Bill Frieder, speaking of Navy's 7-foot-1-inch center David Robinson.
Despite scoring 30 or more points for the 30th time in his career in the loss to Michigan, Robinson took note of the six free throws he had missed, five in the first half, and his 13 rebounds and said, ''I really didn't play as well as I would like.''
