Two-Sport Sensation Kyler Murray Wants The Best Of Both Worlds

With all of the drama surrounding the perils of NFL football and the possible damage it does to the brain, Oklahoma Sooner two-sport sensation Kyler Murray is still willing to risk a $4.8 million MLB payday to fulfill his dream of playing quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners. Like a young Bo Jackson he wants the best of worlds, and he’s not sure when wants to give it up.

With the No. 9 overall pick in the #MLBDraft, the @Athletics select OF Kyler Murray from the University of Oklahoma.

Murray was drafted with the No.9 pick of the MLB Drafton Monday night and he has a big decision to make. Murray has split his time between baseball and football the last few years, and last season he backed up quarterback Baker Mayfield, the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft. This season, he’s expected to take the pigskin from Mayfield and is a preseason Heisman candidate.  Despite his potential financial windfall as a Top-10 MLB player, Murray still wants to wear the Crimson and Cream and fulfill his destiny on the gridiron.

How high will QB Kyler Murray, Oklahoma’s Bo Jackson, go in the MLB Draft? https://t.co/2voHSv5oM3

“He’s going to break all my records,” reigning Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield, a guy who has a few to break, told B/R recently of his projected successor. “He’s that good.”

Murrays football skills are probably more polished than his baseball game. He’s an athletic marvel who hits right-handed with contact and power potential. Hes an impressive defensive outfielder as well, but it will take him some years to develop into a full-fledged MLB starter. At the same time, his 5-11 height is probably more suited for baseball than playing QB in the NFL, but he’s been playing both sports his entire life and he’s a stone-cold killer and already a Texas sports legend.

He’s a great hitter with blazing speed, and the MLB Draft may alter his plans to play football at Texas A&M.

Murray, who turns 21 in August, hit .296 (56-for-189) with 46 runs, 13 doubles, 3 triples, 10 home runs, 47 RBI, a .398 on-base percentage, and a .556 slugging mark in 51 games with the University of Oklahoma during the 2018 season.

During the 2017 summer, the outfielder played 16 games for the Harwich Mariners of the Cape Cod Baseball League. In two seasons with the Sooners, the redshirt sophomore hit .261 (62-for-238) with 62 runs, 13 doubles, 3 triples, 10 home runs, 53 RBI and a .466 slugging mark despite getting just 49 at-bats during the 2017 season.

He appeared in seven games for the Sooners football team in 2017 after sitting out the 2016 season following his transfer from Texas A&M where he appeared in nine games in 2015.

The Texas native was an accomplished Texas high school player, leading Allen High School to three straight state titles and never losing a game as a starting quarterback (430)

His pedigree as an athlete is impeccable. His father, Kevin, lettered at Texas A&M from 198386 and was inducted into the A&M Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame in 2012.

So while football may be the sport he dominates effortlessly, baseball and the lure of its instant riches will be tempting to walk away from. Last MLB Draft Black Knight Hunter Greene was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds with the second overall pick. He’s another player with “special” talents as he can whip it from 60-feet-6 inches and go yard on any pitcher.

Greene is one of the most hyped pro prospects in a while because of his unique two-way abilities and the fact that hes an African-American player rising to the top of a predominantly colorless sport. MLB gave him a record $7.23 million signing bonus not to play college baseball. MLB may not be flooded with soul brothers, but the league certainly isnt shy about paying young African-American talent.

Slotted to make $4.8 million if he signs with A’s, Kyle Murray may not be QB’ing the Sooners next season when they visit Morgantown. https://t.co/77bK2Tep3P

Besides, MLB needs more versatile Black Knights with a deadly combination of power, athleticism, and speed to help recapture the excitement of a game that has become stagnated by a focus on analytics and homers.
