Former WBC lightweight champion Omar Figueroa, Jr. is back this weekend after a 19-month layoff. One half of the “Fighting Figueroa’s,” the eldest brother was plagued with injuries and needed a break from the sport that he has dominated. Different than many other fighters, Figueroa, Jr. was also a full-ride scholarship student at Texas A&M University who left to pursue boxing full-time.
He now steps up in weight to the hallowed welterweight division to face former world champion Robert Guerrero. With Guerrero trying to prove that he still has what it takes after two consecutive recent losses, Figueroa is trying to stay unbeaten and see if he will either go back down in weight to get back the title he never lost or stay in boxing’s money division a little longer. He spoke with us about his upcoming bout against Guerrero on the TSL Power Hour.
